Help Prevent Sewer Backups

Because of the recent shortage of toilet paper, customers may be tempted to flush other materials that can clog their service pipes and the Town’s mains. Toilet paper is designed to break down quickly in water, but the following items cannot be flushed:

  • Baby or adult diapers
  • Cloth rags
  • Facial tissue (Kleenex®)
  • Paper towels
  • So-called "flushable" wipes (baby, adult, disinfecting, etc.)

Why They Should Not Be Flushed

These items can quickly clog household plumbing pipes or municipal sewer pipes, pumps and equipment, leading to sewer backups and overflows. These backups and overflows can cause costly and unhealthy property and environmental damage. As with many organizations, the Town of Fort Mill will be operating on a modified schedule that may result in longer response time to calls for assistance. It is likely that plumbing companies will also be busier than usual. Please do your part to prevent sewer clogs and backups. If you must use materials other than toilet paper, never flush them. Throw the used material in an outdoor trash bin using a plastic bag.
