Updated 5:15 p.m. on Jan. 13, 2026: On Wednesday, Jan. 14, before noon, the Walk for Peace Buddhist monks will be traveling along U.S. 21 through the Town of Fort Mill limits as they continue their 120-day, 2,300-mile walk from Texas to Washington, D.C. They will stop at the Anne Springs Close Greenway for lunch before moving on.
The Fort Mill Police Department is actively coordinating with the York County Sheriff’s Office and the Walk for Peace organizers to ensure a safe walk for the monks.
We expect significant traffic delays, especially north on U.S. 21. Drivers should avoid the area and consider alternate routes, such as I-77 or the Fort Mill Bypass. Click here to view a live map of their anticipated route.
As the Walk for Peace makes its way through our community, please keep in mind the following tips for ensuring everyone’s safety and not impeding the flow of traffic, and for greeting the monks:
-Do not park on the side of the roads near where the monks are walking.
-Do not touch the monks, but you can greet them with hands in a prayer position and slight bow.
-Taking photographs of the monks is acceptable, though they ask not to be photographed during their meals.
Please stay tuned to our social media pages and website for the latest information. You can also follow the Anne Springs Close Greenway for updates on the monks’ visit there and follow the Walk for Peace social media channels for more information on their journey.
