The Town of Fort Mill is hoping several new volunteer programs can restore the beauty of the Town’s public and green spaces following a recent rise of litter in the area.
To help combat the increase of trash found alongside roads, near neighborhoods and in green areas, the Town is excited to announce the launch of its newest litter pickup campaign- Second Saturday Service. On the second Saturday of each month, the Town will host a litter pickup initiative at problem areas throughout the Town limits. The Town has highlighted several areas which have seen an increase in litter in recent months, including U.S. 21, Fort Mill Parkway, Springfield Parkway, Highway 160, Spratt Street, Steele Street, and North and South Doby’s Bridge Road.
As part of this program, volunteers will be able to sign up to collect debris from 8 a.m. to noon. Register at the link below, or on the day of the event from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Fort Mill Farmers Market in Veteran's Park, 106 N. White St. The Town will provide gloves, safety vests, trash bags and a gift of thanks from the Town. Fort Mill employees will collect the filled trash bags following the event each month.
Registration is now OPEN for the Oct. 9 event. Volunteers can sign up for an area of their choice within the Town limits here:
Please make sure to also print, fill out and bring the Town liability form, which you can download here.
We encourage volunteers to share their collection successes by posting their photos with the hashtag #PickItUpPrideFortMill. See the bottom of the page for Litter Pick-Up Safety Tips, the Second Saturday Service Mission Statement and a Fort Mill Subdivision Map for identifying high-litter areas.
The Town is also excited to announce it is now collecting plastic shopping bags as part of its new Bags to Benches program. Collection bins have been placed at various locations in Town where residents can deposit clean, dry plastic shopping bags. The program is in partnership with Trex, a company which will produce a 48” bench for every 500 pounds of shopping bags deposited (equal to 40,500 bags).
