car in winter weather

According to the National Weather Service, as of Saturday at 5 p.m., there is currently a 100 percent chance of a mix of freezing rain, sleet and/or rain in the Fort Mill area beginning late Saturday into early Sunday with a low around 27 degrees. Freezing rain is expected until at least 3 p.m. Sunday, with ice accumulation of between .2 and .4 of an inch. The high temperature is only expected to reach 35 degrees on Sunday, and wind gusts could reach close to 30 miles per hour. There is also a chance of snow between 8 p.m. and midnight on Sunday. Motorists are cautioned this weather could create slippery road conditions on Sunday and Monday. These conditions could also create significant power outages in our area. In preparation, please keep the following items in mind:

  • Keep your phones and laptops charged in case of a power outage.
  • Make sure you have an adequate supply of food, medicine, bottled water, batteries and flashlights.
  • Keep your car fueled.
  • Stay safe from carbon monoxide by making sure you always run your car in a well-ventilated space such as an open garage, and only operate a generator outside.
  • Check on friends, family and neighbors, especially those who are most vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
  • Per Duke Energy, always stay away from fallen or sagging power lines.

Please note, trash collection is still scheduled to occur on Monday as normal, though weather conditions will determine if those services will be postponed until the following day. Emergency services will operate as normal. Also, please remember Town Hall will be closed Monday, Jan. 17 for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The MLK Call to Service Day has been rescheduled to Jan. 22.
